ATLAS and ATHENA

Dr. Linn Goldberg and Dr. Diane Elliot are both professors of medicine at Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU), and together, they've been fighting to reduce steroid abuse amongst teenagers for years.  In putting together their research-based programs, Drs. Goldberg and Elliot paid a great deal of attention to what works and what doesn't with regard to actually changing teen behavior.  They also accounted for the fact that each gender is often drawn to steroids for different reasons.  Personality traits and co-morbid disorders were factored in as well.  The result of this well-reasoned approach were a pair of gender-specific, peer-taught, school programs that have made great strides in teaching young athletes how to excel in sports without the faulty crutch of performance enhancing drugs.

ATLAS (Athletes Training and Learning to Avoid Steroids) is geared toward boys,

ATHENA (Athletes Targeting Healthy Exercise & Nutrition Alternatives) toward girls.
